Double page spread research

Q magazine Front page and double page spread

As you can see this copy of Q shows a clear link between the front page and double page spread in terms of the image but in the image they are wearing different clothing and are in a different setting which I must do for my double page spread and I also like the idea of posing them outside in the DPS as suppose to the inside based front page photo. They keep the same white font on the right hand side of the DPS as what is used on the front page but they also do change the font colour and style for the title of the DPS which yet again allows them differentiate between the two.
The Font they use for the title of their first DPS for the Arctic Monkeys is rather clever as it has the effect of the background picture on it, by this I mean the smoke from the background of the original image is covering certain letters of the title in order to make the font and title seem more natural and to ensure that it does not take any focus away from the image. I like the way that they have made the band name in the small caption highlighted in yellow in order to emphasize and just make it even more clear who they are and with this DPS is all about on the right hand side as the main title is not the bands name.
This is one of two double page spreads that this Q magazine has done for this topic as they have done one which acts as a title page and then the second one is far more I formative and involves a lot more text.
I like this idea of doing two as it slightly more interesting to look at for a reader but also allows more space and room for information from the interview as the title and large image takes up one leaving a second DPS simply for information. The four images on the right hand side of this DPS yet again show the four band members in different clothes which yet again show a differentiation between this page and the front page. The pull quote is located in the middle of the image which emphasizes not only the quote but also the image and by adding a black border around it allows the editor to highlight it and also link it to the people in the image which is obviously what they must do as the people in the image are the people who have said it.

NME magazine front page and double page spread

This double page spread in NME magazine is actually rather different to its front page but that is because the front page is extremely extravagant in terms of colours and images ands therefore the double page spread is slightly more toned down. The font style is one of the only things that does stay the same as you can see it is a rather basic font style and size which links to the idea of keeping some for  of unified house style. The image on double page spread shows the whole band and shows them in a image all together whilst the front cover has a collection of separate images all laid out on the page and with a colour effect on all of the faces. The double page spread has a clever use of imagery, aside from the main image for example this image here is used to advertise a pull quote used which is a good way of highlighting this key role of interest in this article. This image could also be seen as slightly comical and simply helps to add interest and another aspect to this article which is required in order to add to the interesting information coming from the actual article itself.

The text on this first double page spread is also rather small yet informative and also displays a rather
interesting side to the band that is involved in this double page spread as it mentions there trips, experiences and inspirations which set an immediate representation of the band for a reader before they have even began to read the second section of the DPS including the large amount of text. This yet again similarly to the Q magazine acts as an introduction page and that is why it is less informative and more image based as it is almost like a second front cover but simply dedicated to the double page spread article. This idea is made clear when looking at the second double page spread as it is incredibly text heavy and after reviewing my double page spread first draft article I may like to go for this idea as well as it will allow me to display a larger array of interesting images whilst also not neglecting the most important part of a double page spread which is the text and how it is written.

Kerrang
This double page spread is slightly different in terms of the image corresponging with the front cover as on the front cover you only have a picture of the lead singer of the band whereas in the double page spread image you have the whole band. I like the idea that the image on the double page spread relates more with the actual article title than other double page spreads do because the whole article is about the band big concert at Wembley and so they have taken a nice image of all of the band in the Wembley arena which I think is quite good and incredibly relevant. I also have picked up on the fact that they have used the same font colour and style on the front cover for the band name and description as the they have for the double page spread which helps create this unified house style that is so crucial for this magazine to be successful. n looking at this double page spread I do believe that it certainly has enough information and text for it to be a single double page spread but it is however a double ,double page spread and it therefore that this may be slightly too much text for a first DPS as it does not particularly come across as a title page. As much as the second DPS is nicely laid out and the colour scheme keeps in with the house style I do feel as though it has slightly too much information for one article topic and is slightly text heavy. The images however are good as they capture the band rather casually throughout their day at Wembley and the type of pictures that have been taken allow the Band members personalities to come across better to the readers who may  not know of them particularly well.

Front page construction

Front page construction
I began my production by choosing an image and then deciding what I wanted to do with it and what tools to use. This is my original image. I dropped this into photo shop and decided to use the quick selection tool.

After I quick selected it I then dragged it into a separate photo shop file and began refining the photo in order to get rid of bits that had stayed on the image during the quick selection. I did this by enlarging it and then using the eraser tool.
After this was erased I then began to build my front cover around my image.

I then had to decide then what background colour I wanted to use as this then decided every other colour that I would use. This is my image after it was edited and then I began my background creation. I First of all drew a box around the background and made this box the background
Then I decided a filter colour, the colour I decided was a black/silver textured colour in order to give a metallic effect that I have seen in Vibe magazine on their front covers. I then selected the gradient tool
and dragged the line across the page in order to gradient the whole page and add the effect.

Font
I then researched my fonts and found my font on dafont and after this I decided to use hand typography and after looking through many colours I decided to use a gold colour in order to contrast but also link to the silver metallic background. I then had to decided on an area of the page to place the front cover and after reviewing many different angles I decided to place it just behind the head of the head of the character with a slightly faded effect.
I then had to work on my font and text positioning in order to ensure that my magazine is not to cluttered and also not too bare with too much wasted space.

This is an example of my text placing, with this section I spent a lot of time trying to discover where to put the large 99. After rather a lot of trial and error I decided to place it just above the artists shoulder as it fits in rather nicely and also leaves space to the right of it for the text, I wanted the number to be the same size as the three words 'Big indie hits" and so it fits together rather well and allows me to maximize my space.

I then had to add several finishing touches in order to make the magazine resemble a professional magazine, these features were the two code stickers. My first code was the barcode, I placed this in the bottom right hand side of the page, After trying several different positions I decided that this was the best place to put this and by rotating it I was able to fit it into the space I had made with my image and so it allowed me to place it in without wasting space and losing content on my front page which is a connotation of all successful music magazines.
My second code was the competition barcode, this code is placed in the bottom left hand corner and I have sized it in order.

front page feedback

I asked a group of year 13's to asses my front cover first draft and here is the sheet that they gave me back with several notes and tips on how to improve my work.

contents page reserach

Contents page examples

NME
NME's contents pages are incredibly consistent in terms of layout and that is what I would like to incorporate into my magazine. They set their pages numbers and index all up the right hand side and then highlight the key features on the right hand side in bigger and more bold font. They only use on image which is of the main topic of the weeks issue but I would like to possibly have one or two more than this but I would like to also use the idea of having an example picture and using it in the subscription section of the contents page.

NME second contents page 2
This copy of NME has a slightly different layout in terms of the contents page as it is far more spaced out and rather simple in comparison to the original two in terms of the bhouse style but that is because it must have a link in terms of style with its front page and the corrisponding front page for this conetnts page is different in terms of style aswell as it is more formal and basic but does still have a slightly urban element with he font and yellow colours. This contents page has far more images and far less content than the original NME but what I like about this is the fact that although it has gone for a far more image based page; it has not lost the vita; information that is essential for a good contents page and this is the iea that i would like to use as i would like to make my contents page rather easy on the eye in terms of visuals but also do not want to lose the necessary information and features and to do this you must use the space well and I believe that this is what this page has done.

Kerrang
Kerrang has recently changed their contents page setup but I decided to use these two slightly older examples as they highlight ideas that I like and would be interested in using in my contents page. In these two they have used far more images than the examples of NME and I prefer that as it makes the contents page a little less text heavy without making it seem to simply with too many images. The idea of more images also adds a slight bit more clarity to what is in the magazine to the reader as sometimes people may only know people through faces and no their names. Another idea that they have made consistent in their contents pages is the idea of using two key colour throughout for font and that is again an idea that I would like to use, in these two they use the two contrasting colours of black and yellow, in mine I would most likely think of using gold and white possible as these two colour features heavily throughout my front page especially golf which is the colour of my masthead.

Billboard
This example of a billboard contents page connotes a more simple idea as it is far less busy than the other two and does not use as many content sections or separate features', it simply just lists the more important features and that is it. It uses one image of what is clearly the headlining/main topic of the issue it then fits the text around the image. I do not like the idea of only using a small amount of magazine content but I do however like the idea of moulding my text around my main focus images and avoiding separation between the images and text and therefore I may think of incorporating this idea into my work in some way.

Rolling stones magazine

This copy of rolling stones magazine is similar to Billboard in regards to the layout with the content all forming the right hand side of the page and images being used on the left. In this there is far more content and it is divided up into sections as well which makes it far more organized and easier to navigate for the reader. The use of images are slightly different as they are images of different covers used by the magazine and there is no separate image of the main topic of the magazine or artist involved which makes this contents page far different from others and although I would like to use the idea of advertising the magazine subscription by using an image of a front cover; I do not like the idea of not using an separate images and not highlighting a key point or topic of the magazine.
Rock-sound
The contents page of Rock sound is rather similar to Billboards in terms of the lack of text and having just one large, dominating image that takes up half the space on the page. This image is a nice image that shows all four members of the band in a rather comical way with the animations of animals on their body. This idea of the animations is meant to link with the title of the extract which is on the front and that is "inside the mad world of panic at the disco", this links well with the idea of madness as these animations are rather peculiar and extra ordinary which can constitute madness. The colour used on the contents page are rather basic yet work quite well with the idea of the red used to highlight the  numbers and main features title linking to the red in the sofa and several items of clothing that the band members are wearing. One thing that i certainly would change about this image is the fact that the band members are all, wearing the same clothes that they wearing on the front page and therefore there is no variation or change between the two images in that sense.

Page furniture analysis

Page furniture
In my recent post about how to establish house style I mentioned the idea of layout and design elements contributing to the establishment of a house style and it is these design elements that make up page furniture. I studied an issue of NME in order to find some examples of page furniture/design elements.
This example shows NME's idea of highlighting their sections titles with a coloured box. This design element allows the magazine to put more emphasis on each specific section and make the title stands out better, also by making each sections title a different box colour it just simply becomes more easy on the eye to the reader and a bit more exciting. These boxes are used throughout and therefore contribute to establishing a house style as they are used to highlight every title for every separate section.

Another design element that NME has introduced throughout their interview articles is the idea of underlining the pull quotes. The idea of pull quotes is to highlight a specific quote that the artist being interviewed has made as it may be important or incredibly interesting for the reader to see. By underlining it that simply adds to the emphasis of the pull quote and allows the reader to determine that this pull quote is important in terms of the articles meaning.
One last thing that I discovered during my research into NME's page furniture is their way they present the page numbers. On almost every page the page number is presented like this one with a triangle around it located in the middle far left or right of the page. This is just a gimmicky twist on the usual mundane way of presenting the page numbers in the bottom corner of the page. By changing this small design element it simply allows the magazine to come across as more new and stylish which would appeal to their young target audience. This yet again contributes to the house style as it appears frequently throughout every issue.

After doing this research I have a much better idea of how to use page furniture in order to make my magazine look more professional and also how to link it throughout my pages.
